HEALTH AND NUTRITION

Mercy Ships is engaging in the following health and nutrition projects:

Food for Life (Agriculture) - Royesville & Tenegar

Project Goal: To increase Liberia’s food security and agricultural production

Project Objectives: Increase agricultural capacity of 60 small-scale farmers from urban and rural settings to manage their local resources for increased food security (measured by pre/post tests). Increase agricultural productivity and availability of locally-grown food through the establishment of 60 household gardens by November ’08. Mentor six Liberian agriculturalists to promote agricultural resource management in their respective communities (measured by pre/post tests). Increase potential diet diversity and nutritional completeness in 60 household gardens by increasing the variety and quantity of agricultural products available. Promote local food production as a means to reduce poverty, increase income, and improve quality of life for 60 households. Demonstrate increased knowledge of land and resource conservation by students (measured through pre/post tests). Incorporate training in organic soil building techniques and natural/locally available weed and pest controls into 60 household gardens with participants demonstrating increased knowledge of their use and application (measured through pre/post tests).

Outpatient Clinic for Children

Project Goal: To reduce childhood morbidity and mortality by providing basic health care services to children 12 years and under through diagnosis, medical treatment, immunizations, and community health education

Project Objectives: To conduct 5,000 health care consultations for children 12 years and under by providing diagnosis and treatment of potential life-threatening diseases, such as malaria, anemia, pneumonia, diarrheal disease, and typhoid fever. To provide preventative health care through the immunization of 500 children for major illnesses and diseases including: oral polio, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Measles, Yellow Fever, Hepatitis B, and Haemophilus influenzae type B. To provide culturally-appropriate training on malaria and diarrhea to caregivers of children served by the clinic.
